Course: Writing and Selling a Nonfiction Magazine
Article
Teacher: Kelly Boyer Sagert
8 week course
Cost: $80.00
Writing (and then selling) a nonfiction magazine article can feel like such a mysterious
and frustrating process. In this course, that process is broken down into manageable and
easily understandable bits of information, so that you can target your audience, craft a
query letter, and then write a winning article.
At the end of the course, each student should have one or more articles written in a
magazine-style format, along with a corresponding list of potential markets for the
completed work.
About the Teacher:
Kelly Boyer Sagert has sold over 1000 articles to newspapers, magazines, encyclopedias and
online venues. She is the managing editor of Northern Ohio's Over the Back Fence, the
magazine that profiles the art, history, intriguing people and fascinating places along
Lake Erie's shores. Writer's Digest nominated this publication for their "Top 100
Award" in 1998 and 1999 and 2000, and Sagert also edits 4 trade magazines (Intercom,
Realtor Review, Dateline and Builder), along with business directories and travel
planners. She is the contributing editor to Southern Ohio's Over the Back Fence and she
hosts a cable television show that shares the "story behind the story" of the
magazine's intriguing articles.
